The Issue: Biological Contamination
Project: Facility Reconnaissance and Assessment
Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing flooding of New Orleans left hundreds of thousands of residents stranded in the city. Memorial Hospital, one of the city’s largest healthcare facilities was surrounded by toxic flood waters and became an island upon which patients, staff and others sought refuge. Without power and water the sanitary condition of the hospital and the environment for those stranded inside degraded rapidly. Many days later after the last person had been evacuated the hospital sat lifelessly exposed to the elements leaving behind both controversy and a symbol of survival and hope.
In October 2005 Sabre was contracted to reconnoiter and document the interior conditions of the hospital. Equipped for hazardous operations in chemical and biologically contaminated environments, Sabre staff made multiple entries into the facility.
Upon completion of its work Sabre provided its reconnaissance documentation and assessment findings and recommendations.
